Description

The F-14 Tomcat, developed at the beginning of the 1970s by the Grumman Aerospace Corporation, was initially conceived as a so-called air-superiority fighter. Its use was essentially directed against other fighter planes, so speed and manoeuvrability played an important role.

Two jet engines provided great reliability. The enormous range of over 3,000 kilometres could be accomplished through two additional outside tanks. There was also the possibility of refuelling in the air.

From 1972 to 1992, the United States of America kept all that technical sophistication almost exclusively for itself. The only foreign customer was the Imperial Iranian Air Force before the revolution there. However, some of the 79 fighter jets delivered are still in use today.
