Designed to complement the Mikoyan MiG-29 and counter the McDonnell Douglas F-15 for air superiority missions, the Sukhoi Su-27 had the Soviet Union’s first operational fly-by-wire control system. It is a very agile, heavy fighter with a long range that has found itself on opposite sides in a number of conflicts, including the Eritrea-Ethiopia War (1999) and the Russo-Ukrainian War (2022–date).
