Phoenix by Susi Cruz – kit from LEGO® bricks

With over 223,000 subscribers on YouTube and 80,000 followers on Instagram, Susi Cruz is clearly a source of inspiration and admiration for many people. And, indeed, her sunny demeanour, strong work ethic and words of encouragement are inspiring; her fashion and cooking tips have without doubt also contributed towards her popularity.

Born in Düsseldorf, Germany to Chinese parents, she studied fashion and design management at university, but quit three months before the end of her degree when she realised that she wanted to follow a different dream. One involving freedom and adventure. Susi saved up for a couple of years in order to buy a used van and then built it herself. Alongside her doggy best friend, Jalapeño (called Peño for short), she set off on a great adventure in September 2017.

The tour began in Europe; China, the land of her ancestors, was her distant destination. An accident on a UK motorway around Christmas 2019 could have spelled the end of the story for Susi, however, who was badly shaken and upset by the experience. Thankfully, her home and source of income were able to be salvaged, and from the ashes of the fire, a brand-new and improved van was born. Fittingly renamed ‘Phoenix’, the damage was soon repaired, helped in large part by donations from her fans and supporters.

As the world slowly came out of the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic, Susi began to resume her travels across Europe. However, our continent got too small for her, so now, in the late summer of 2021, we see her exploring the Americas.
