Description
This small, pretty bird from the finch family actually comes from the Canary Islands but has been bred in captivity for centuries. Even kings were enthusiastic about his colourful plumage and melodious singing.
Nowadays, there are many breeds of the tireless singer, which differ in their singing, their colouring and even in their shape. The idiom ‘canary in a coal mine’ derives from the fact that domestic canaries are more sensitive to carbon monoxide than humans and thus were kept in cages below ground to act as an early warning system for miners to escape when the gas reached dangerous levels.
A canary masters up to 400 sound elements and is able to learn them for a lifetime.
