Description

The Sopwith Camel by the Sopwith Aviation Company is considered the most successful British fighter of the First World War. 5,490 units were built and used by the Allies in 1917 and 1918.

The actual name of the biplane with two pairs of wings lying on top of each other was the Sopwith Biplane F.1. But the nickname Camel, which the aeroplane earned because of the hump-shaped cladding on its machine guns, stuck over the years and replaced its official name.

Fans of the comic Peanuts should also be familiar with the plane, as it appears in the paperback book Snoopy and His Sopwith Camel. During a terrific dream, Snoopy’s kennel mutates into a plane of this type. In it, daredevil pilot Snoopy challenges Red Baron Manfred von Richthofen in a Fokker Dr.I to an aerial combat.
