Description

Nicknamed Aunt Ju or Iron Annie, the Junkers Ju 52 was initially conceived as a single-engine aircraft before it went into production in 1931 with a trimotor configuration to lend it more power. In the theatre of war, it was primarily used as military transport for both troops and cargo – it could carry up to 18 fully-equipped soldiers or 12 stretchers. To some extent, it was also used as a bomber, perhaps most famously of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. However, it was a reliable passenger carrier and freighter during peacetime. Nearly 5,000 units were manufactured up to 1952 – after the Second World War, production was discontinued in Germany and instead resumed in France and Spain. While some surviving planes are still airworthy, the majority can be found on display in museums across the world.

Ralf designed this model in summer 2023, though he had wanted to build it for some time because he sees the Junkers Ju 52 as very iconic as well as an important part of aviation history.
