Description

The Lanz Bulldog by Heinrich Lanz AG of Mannheim was a great success in its day. ‘Bulldog’ (doesn’t it look a bit like its animal counterpart from the front?) even became the colloquial generic name for agricultural tractors from other manufacturers.

The Lanz Bulldog D1506, the top model in the Ackerluft Bulldog family, was produced from 1937 to 1955. Motorisation was as simple as it was ingenious: its single-cylinder, two-stroke, medium-pressure engine with hot bulb ignition swallowed pretty much everything from cheap crude oil to domestic vegetable oil. The hot bulb era ended in the 1950s with the introduction of the considerably more economical diesel engines.

If you come across a Lanz Bulldog in the wild nowadays, you can safely assume that it’s approaching retirement age. Heinrich Lanz AG was taken over by the American agricultural machinery manufacturer John Deere in 1956, which stopped using the brand and company name of Lanz from 1967.
