Deep black head and legs and a woolly white body – the Suffolk sheep is easy to recognise. They are a familiar sight on English, Irish and Scottish pastures.

What lies under the wool can only be guessed at: this domestic sheep has been bred in England since the end of the 18th century to be very powerful and, thanks to its rapid growth, is considered a good source of meat. However, fortunately times are changing and the consumption of meat is in decline. A full-grown ram weighs 200 kilograms; a yearling musters 100 kilograms. Neither has horns, which could help them escape their fate.
