White-tailed jackrabbits are in fact a species of hare rather than rabbit, as reflected by their alternative name, prairie hares. They inhabit the Great Plains of Canada and the USA but are also at home in the Rocky Mountains. They can be distinguished from other types of hare mainly by their white tails.

Like other types of hare, white-tailed jackrabbits are nocturnal. They munch their way through the landscape from late afternoon until dawn. To the farmers’ chagrin, they prefer to plunder the fruits of their labour.

To many other wild animals, these shy long-eared animals are tasty prey. But they have to catch them first: white-tailed jackrabbits reach a speed of up to 55 km/h, including slick zigzagging.
