Description
The harp seal is also known as the saddleback seal. It only takes a little imagination to make out a harp shape in the black markings along the spine of adult animals.
The harp seal’s preferred abode is principally the water. Arctic Ocean pack ice is these limber animals’ favourite habitat, but they manage perfectly well even without ice. They prefer to eat fish and crustaceans but are quite flexible depending on what is regionally and seasonally available.
For a long time, the scandalous slaughter of snow-white pups was a big issue. However, thanks to information campaigns by animal welfare organisations and subsequent international protests on a large scale, the market for baby seal skins largely ground to a halt. Hunting adult animals is still allowed, but this does not pose a threat to the species as a whole. Though many a seal hunter has today switched to accompanying tourists on seal-watching tours.
