Description
A parrot that can’t fly? Yes, there is such a thing, in New Zealand. And only just, because at the end of the last century, the up to 60 cm tall, three to four kilo heavy greenish black bird almost went extinct.
How is he to use these dimensions to escape new enemies like cats, dogs or rats, who had found their way into New Zealand’s hitherto clear wilderness through colonisation? The usual tactic – don’t move until the danger has passed – was sadly only helpful against eagles. Current status: there are about 200 kakapos, all relocated to a few small islands, which were previously purged of predators that had been accidentally introduced.
