Description

Called by many a name (the peewit, the tuit and the green plover amongst others), the northern lapwing can also be found in many a place as a migratory bird, though he is endemic to temperate Eurosiberia and is even the national bird of Ireland. The name of the family, lapwing, is derived from ‘lapping’, an Old English word referring to the sound the bird’s wings make in flight, while the Latin name of the species, Vanellus vanellus, derives from the word vannus, meaning ‘winnowing fan’.

With a diet mainly consisting of insects and worms, the northern lapwing’s natural habitat includes farmland and wetland. The northern lapwing is not sexually dimorphic, meaning that the females tend to have a similar size and colouring to the males of the species. The black crest on their head lends them a very elegant yet quirky appearance.
