Description
This medium-sized songbird with colourful plumage is extremely shy. Nevertheless, he cannot be missed – at least not the ready-to-mate male – and as a so-called synanthrope can also be observed with a little patience.
Painted buntings are versatile; both insects and grains are on their menu. Depending on the season, their habitat stretches from North America via Mexico to the countries of Central America.
The male remains faithful to his female for life, helping to build the nest as well as raising young. In order not to have to breed, he has the best of excuses: the male painted bunting is simply too beautiful for this and would betray the nest to predators.
